4 Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Working Properly
Have you noticed that your home's air conditioner is not working properly, and you have no idea why? If so, you'll want to know some reasons why you are no longer getting cold air and what can be done to fix it.
Bad Thermostat
It's worth looking at the thermostat to make sure that it is running correctly. The problem could be as simple as the thermostat having dead batteries and not getting the power that it needs, or someone in your home setting a schedule on the thermostat that you are not aware of. Newer smart thermostats have an internal battery that does not need replacement, and is charged when the HVAC system is running. A dead battery would have to be charged through the USB port.
Tripped Circuit Breaker
Another easy thing to check is the circuit breaker that powers your air conditioner. Make sure that the circuit has not been tripped, because it may have shut off as a safety precaution due to excess electrical current. You'll need to bring in professional help if the problem was not a one-time thing and the circuit breaker continues to trip.
Frozen Evaporator Coils
Frozen evaporator coils within your air handler can actually cause the system to blow hot air throughout your home. The air won't become cold by passing over frozen coils, since the purpose of the evaporator coils are to actually extract the heat from the air so that the air temperature drops. The refrigerant cannot move through the coils and carry the heat out of your home if they are frozen, and the air will remain hot as a result.
Unfortunately, there is not a single reason why the evaporator coils are freezing. One thing an HVAC professional will do while inspecting the evaporator coils is to let the ice naturally thaw from them and then clean the coils. Built-up dirt and debris on the coils can be the reason why they are struggling to absorb heat due to a lack of exposed surface area.
Incorrectly Sized Air Conditioner
Believe it or not, it's possible to have an air conditioner that is too big for your home. While it can cool down your home quickly, you'll be lacking the benefits that come from gradually increasing the temperature of your home. It creates a temperature that is even everywhere, which makes the air conditioner feel more comfortable in general.
